The SZL series boiler is a horizontal, dual-cylinder, chain grate boiler designed for steam and hot water. This series meets international ASME standards for high performance and environmental protection. It combines the advantages of package boilers, featuring a compact structure, single-storey shop layout, easy installation, short construction period, low cost, and simple operation.
All Zozen boilers are controlled by Energy Partners’ Optiflame Control System. The system includes remote monitoring and energy optimisation. Energy Partners’ Steam division developed the control system to optimise the boiler house equipment. The purpose of our control system is to achieve:
Steam pressure control – A stable steam supply under varying operating load conditions.
Boiler efficiency – Boiler efficiency is primarily driven by control of excess air (air-fuel ratio). Using frequency inverters and electronic fuel trim control, coal usage is reduced. The reduction in usage is typically between 8% and 15% when compared to electro-mechanical or manual control systems.
Boiler preservation – Motors run much slower and less coal is burnt, reducing maintenance, and increasing economic life expectancy.
Environmental impacts – Simply burning less coal and using less electricity reduces harmful emissions. Furthermore, proper excess air control minimises the release of NOx and CO emissions into the atmosphere.
Elimination of human intervention – Decision-making becomes the function of a programmed steam production process. The response to changes in steam supply conditions is immediate and consistent. The human factor in boiler operation is reduced significantly.
The control system is coupled with the EP oxygen sensor that was developed in-house. This enables the control system to trim the boiler controls to the optimum combustion setpoint.

About Us
Energy Partners Steam has been a going concern since 1958, first as The Ernest Dryden Co. (Pty) Ltd., then as The Dryden Combustion Company (Pty) Ltd, and today as Energy Partners Steam, a division of Energy Partners Holdings (Pty) Ltd.
Dryden Combustion History
In 1945, Ernest Dryden flew from Durban to negotiate with the owners of Daniel Adamson of Dunkfield, Cheshire, England, for representation in Southern Africa. This company was in a unique position being able to manufacture a complete power station in their own works, namely, watertube boilers and turbo alternators.
On his return to Johannesburg, Dryden formed the company, The Dryden Danadamson Co. (Pty) Ltd. This company was on a 50% share basis. After trading for approximately four years, it was successful in securing substantial orders for watertube boilers for the East London Power Station, through Merz and McLellan. The company also received orders for boilers and turbo alternators for the Kroonstad and Cradock power stations. As the bulk of the equipment would need to be supplied by Daniel Adamson in Dunkinfield, a new company – Daniel Adamson (Africa) (Pty) Ltd – was established, once again on a 50% basis. The original company continued operations, focusing on underfeed stokers, dutchovens, and related equipment.
When Daniel Adamson was taken over in 1958, there was an option to buy the remaining shares, and the company’s name changed to The Ernest Dryden Co. (Pty) Ltd.
The company’s initial focus remained on the supply of watertube boilers to clients such as Thesen Marine. Although that company has since closed, the original chimney stacks have been preserved and can be seen on Thesen Islands in Knysna today.
In 1988, the business was purchased from the Dryden family by Gordon Slater and Sue Kiley. Under their leadership, the company shifted focus from watertube boilers to coal-, oil- and gas-fired packaged steam boilers. Dryden Combustion grew to become a market leader in its field. The company has supplied boilers to South Africa and neighbouring states, exporting too to countries such as Poland and China.
Dryden Combustion’s renowned heritage and trusted name were strengthened when it was acquired by Energy Partners in 2017. Now part of the PSG group, Dryden Combustion has been rebranded as Energy Partners Steam.
Although the name has changed, the company’s commitment to service and product quality remains steadfast. Backed by over 60 years’ industry experience and ISO 9001 accreditation, Energy Partners Steam is dedicated to lowering the cost of steam by minimising downtime and optimising efficiency.
With our vision to be the leading provider of steam solutions in Southern Africa, we focus on delivering value and reliability to clients, backed by our team of highly skilled engineers, installation crews and trusted partners.
